First Written Word (part 12)

[My maternal grandmother, Sibyl Mary Croly, was born in Cadillac, Michigan on February 29, 1888, to James Croly and Maria (Cowles) (Dennett) Croly.  In 1889, her father started a journal about her, entitled "The Record of Little Sibyl." This is an exact transcription of the contents.]

[Written by Aunt Nellie Cowles.]

Sibyl’s First Written Word

This is Sibyl’s absolutely unaided effort to write kisses and her name.  I [Aunt Nellie] have never even shown her to print.

[During her life, Sibyl was a prolific author.  Her published works included two books of poetry, a novel and an operetta. She also had numerous articles, essays and poetry published in newspapers, magazines and anthologies. In addition to her published works, she left a multitude of unpublished works in the form of poetry, short stories, essays and letters.]
